Maddie is beyond done with her cousin Genesis’s entitled and shallow entourage. Genesis is so over Miami’s predictable social scene with its velvet ropes, petty power plays, and backstabbing boyfriends.

While Maddie craves family time for spring break, Genesis seeks novelty—like a last-minute getaway to an untouched beach in Colombia. And when Genesis wants something, it happens.

But paradise has its price. Dragged from their tents under the cover of dark, Genesis, Maddie, and their friends are kidnapped and held for ransom deep inside the jungle—with no diva left behind. It all feels so random to everyone except Genesis. She knows they were targeted for a reason. And that reason is her.

Now, as the hours count down, only one thing’s for certain: If the Miami hostages can’t thwart their captors’ plan, no one will make it out alive.

100 Hours follows two cousins on their spring break vacation in Colombia, Genesis Valencia is the heiress of a large transportation company, so she´s used to get everything she wants and get away with it because of her father's money. Maddie Valencia lost her father a year before and she lives with her mother and older brother with a middle income, so on her vacation she and her brother Ryan end up accompanying Genesis, who travels with her boyfriend and her two best friends, all of them rich.

The original idea was that they would travel to Bahamas, but once in the private jet, Genesis changes their plans and they end up traveling to Colombia, the country where Genesis and Maddie´s fathers were born and where their paternal grandmother still lives, so their family back home in Miami aren´t aware of the change of itinerary.

Once in Colombia Genesis, Maddie, Ryan and their group of friends are kidnapped and taken to the jungle of Colombia where they plan to request ransom.

100 Hours is told from the point of view of Maddie and Genesis and begins in the present when they are kidnapped, and then jumps 100 hours before to see little by little how all their problems started.

Of the two cousins I like Maddie, she´s more focused, less selfish and more likeable, easier to feel some kind of connection or worry about what happened to her. While Genesis is more selfish and unlikeable, but what saves her as a character is a bit her past and that due to that past she´s always on the defensive and prepared for this type of situation. There is a certain type of romance for the Valencia cousins, but it´s on a secondary level, since they have more important things to do ... like survive.

And as this book is part of a duology it ends with a cliffhanger (the last few chapters I was suspecting everyone, I just knew that something was going to happen, I was waiting for the twist and it delivered), so I will have to read the following book to see how the story of the Valencia cousins ends.

Review: The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

Title: The Upside of Unrequited
Author: Becky Albertalli
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Release date: April 11th 2017
Source: Edelweiss
Format: eARC

Rating: 4/5

Buy onAmazon | B&N | BookDepository
Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love. No matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.

Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly's totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie's new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. If Molly can win him over, she'll get her first kiss and she'll get her twin back.

There's only one problem: Molly's coworker, Reid. He's a chubby Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there's absolutely no way Molly could fall for him.

Right?

I read Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda two years ago and I loved it, it's adorable, that´s why I really wanted to read another book by the same author and although I didn´t like it as much as the previous one, I enjoyed it a lot.

Molly is a 17-year-old overweight girl, she´s insecure and has anxiety, she´s a girl who has fallen in love or had had crushes with twenty-six boys ... but she has not kissed any of them and she knows what unrequited love is. Cassie, her fraternal twin sister is the opposite of her, she´s sociable, cynical, and speaks unabashedly. Both are best friends of each other and have always done everything together and they tell the other everything, but when Cassie meets her ideal girl, Molly begins to notice changes between them, something that doesn´t like, but that she has to support her sister in the pursuit of her first love.

The Upside of Unrequited is about two sisters finding their first love (first Cassie and later Molly) and how this change things between them, how they stop doing things they always did together to now spend more time with the girlfriend in Cassie's case, and a boy she likes in Molly´s case, how their friendship changes, how they are no longer the first to know everything about each other, because there is someone else, someone new to tell they want to tell things first. The one that suffers most with these changes is Molly, she´s used to being the number one person of her twin sister, in addition to that added to her insecurities, she´s the one that has problems with the changes. This novel is told from Molly's point of view.

What was a pleasant surprise to me in this novel was that The Upside of Unrequited and Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda are connected to a certain extent, since Molly and Cassie are cousins of Abby Suso (Simon´s friend), so through this connection we get to see a bit of what is happening with the characters of Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda.

Overall, I liked this book, it´s a good option for those that like contemporary YA novels.

The Sudden Appearance of Hope by Claire North (2.5/5 stars)
It took me 2 weeks to read this book. It has a really good premise, a MC that is forgotten as soon as she´s out of sight, she´s the thief that everybody forgets, she´s obsessive and lonely and she steals sometimes to survive and sometimes just because she can get await with it.

I didn´t like the narrative, it´s told from Hope´s POV, but it has very little dialogue, it has a lot of flashbacks and she spews random facts or dictionary definitions, so I skip around those parts and the book felt a little too long.
Epic Fail by Claire LaZebnik (3.5 or 4/5 stars)
What You Always Wanted by Kristin Rae (3.5/5 stars)

What I´m going to read next?
Froi of the Exiles (Lumatere Chronicles #2) by Melina Marchetta
