Some secrets are too good to keep.

Tabitha might be the only girl in the history of the world who actually gets less popular when she gets hot. But her so-called friends say she’s changed, and they’ve dropped her flat.

Now Tab has no one to tell about the best and worst thing that has ever happened to her: Joe, who spills his most intimate secrets to her in their nightly online chats. Joe, whose touch is so electric, it makes Tab wonder if she could survive an actual kiss. Joe, who has Tabitha brimming with the restless energy of falling in love. Joe, who is someone else’s boyfriend.

Just when Tab is afraid she’ll burst from keeping the secret of Joe inside, she finds Life by Committee. The rules of LBC are simple: tell a secret, receive an assignment. Complete the assignment to keep your secret safe.

Tab likes it that the assignments push her to her limits, empowering her to live boldly and go further than she’d ever go on her own.

But in the name of truth and bravery, how far is too far to go?

It has been a very long time since I had read a story where I didn´t like the main character ( for the first three parts of the book), and that I thought that some of her decisions were dumb, had mixed feelings about it, but that strangely I enjoyed the book; because that happened to me with Life by Committee. Tabitha´s story is engrossing and I just couldn´t put it down even though I tried some times because some of her decisions....but I just could not stop reading.

The main character of Life by Committee is Tabitha, a 16-year-old, that recently was shun by her best friends, they say she had changed because she wears too much makeup and wears more revealing clothes; so now Tabitha hangs out with her new and only friend, Elise a girl with whom she occasionally hangs out at school, but is not the same as with her former best friends, so at night she chats with Joe, a guy who has known all his life, but recently began to show interest in her and she's starting to have feelings for him and apparently the feeling is mutual, the only problem is that he has a girlfriend and it does not seem that he will break up with her soon.

So when she comes upon a website called Life by Committee, on which your identity is anonymous and it has a rule that you must say a secret and in return you´ll receive a task that you must complete in less than 24 hours if you want remain a member and also to keep your secret is safe, so she immediately joins and start sharing her secrets and receives support from several people (anonymous people) and Tabitha begins to feel that in Life by Committee members she has found  out new friends and people that understand her ..... until the tasks start to get out of control and she´s no longer sure what to do with such tasks.

What really upset me about Tabitha is that she´s having feelings for Joe, whom has a girlfriend and keeps making excuses to not break up with his girlfriend, but it's obvious he wants more with Tabitha and she allows him to play her! and she spends her time studying everything about Joe, every move, word and touch ... and gladly accept the crumbs of love that he gives her. Such as:
"And maybe the avoiding eye contact is supposed to let me know that he´s not interested, but it does the exact opposite. All I gather from the lack of eye contact is how scared he is. And how sad at the prospect of losing me."
And while he goes out on a date with his girlfriend at the place where she works and her family owns.
"He´s in a collared white shirt and a thick blue sweater and it´s so handsome and unlikely on him, I have to wonder if maybe it´s for me."
It really bother me a lot her attitude, but it was a little sad to see her needing someone, anyone´s approval and/or affection.

But what kept me captivated was the part about the website for Life Committee, this part of the story is very interesting. And the plot has some unexpected twists and turns and I liked that last part of the book because Tabitha grew up a little and I liked the ending.

{Blog Tour} Review: Guardian by Alex London + Giveaway

ABOUT THE BOOK
Guardian (Proxy, #2) by Alex London
Release Date: May 29, 2014
Hardcover: 352 pages
Publisher: Philomel
Genre: YA / Dystopian / LGBT
The pulse-pounding sequel to Proxy! Inspired by The Whipping Boy and Feed, this adrenaline-fueled thriller will appeal to fans of The Hunger Games and Divergent.

In the new world led by the Rebooters, former Proxy Syd is the figurehead of the Revolution, beloved by some and hated by others. Liam, a seventeen-year-old Rebooter, is Syd’s bodyguard and must protect him with his life. But armed Machinists aren’t the only danger.

People are falling ill—their veins show through their skin, they find it hard to speak, and sores erupt all over their bodies. Guardians, the violent enforcers of the old system, are hit first, and the government does nothing to help. The old elites fall next, and in the face of an indifferent government, Syd decides it’s up to him to find a cure . . . and what he discovers leaves him stunned.

This heart-stopping thriller is packed with action, adventure, and heroics. Guardian will leave you breathless until the final page.

A fast-paced, thrill-ride of novel full of non-stop action, heart-hammering suspense and true friendship—just as moving as it is exhilarating. Fans of Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider series, James Dashner's Maze Runner, Patrick Ness's Chaos Walking series, and Marie Lu's Legend trilogy will be swept away by this story.

REVIEW
After Proxy´s ending, I needed to read its sequel immediately. And I really enjoyed Guardian.

The story begins six months later after Proxy and Syd is now known as Yovel and is the face of the revolution, his savior, a key part of the Reconciliation (formerly known as Rebooters) and while he is adored by many, he´s also hated by the Machinists, they want him dead (They were the rich people of Mountain City and await the return of technology), and for this last thing Syd needs a bodyguard all the time, which is Liam a young revolutionary that´s feared by many and he puts Syd's life before anyone and he doen´t doubt to kill anyone to protect him.

In the first part of the book we see Syd, with some responsibilities as their savior but he isn´t very happy about it since he was not their savior, nor the one that brought down the network and he never wanted to be part of it, so he isn´t doing rallies or performing in front  of an audience, he spends his time withdrawn and not wanting to interact with others, because he keeps remembering the last words of one of his friends and has guilt for those who died because of him. And we also see Marie, Syd´s only friend, she´s a purifier that is not other that their enforcer, that make sure that everyone follows their new rules by any means necessary. And while Syd doesn´t agree with the new regime, Marie is a faithful follower ..... until something happens that makes her change her mind.

The plot focus heavily in the new regime and that change is not always good, and many of the ideals of the revolutionaries are not accepted by others; so after we see the revolution there are still the oppressors and the oppressed, but now the tables are turned, this time the one time poor people are the one in power and the one that used to be rich are sent to labor camps or executed.

But the main part of the plot is that the Guardians begin to develop a disease but nobody cares because they´re the only affected by it, but the disease is spreading and as those that used to be in power are next, but still nobody care or do anything about it, that´s why Syd decides to investigate and tries to learn what´s really happening and when he learns the truth .... he starts another cross-country chase to try to prevent the further spread, while others try to stop him.

Overall, I really enjoyed Guardian, it´s an even darker and more violent story than its predecessor, the plot is fast-paced, action-packed and I read it really fast, I loved the beginning of a romance and my favorite character this time was Liam. The ending was very abrupt for my taste so I hope there will be a sequel!
I highly recommended it for fans of dystopian novels and those who like diversity in the characters.

EXCERPT
Chapter One – GUARDIAN by Alex London
At night, they disposed of the bodies. There was no ceremony, no ritual, no remembrance.
“They’re human,” some argued.
“They were human,” said others. “Now they’re meat.”
“We have to study the infection,” said the doctor.
“We have to contain it,” said the counselor and gave her orders. “Burn the bodies.”
A work detail was tasked with the burning. One by one, in the dead of night, green uniforms with white masks hauled corpses to the pile. The corpses were webbed with black veins, their entire network of blood vessels visible through the pale skin. Dried blood obscured their faces and each had a single hole in the temple by the eyes, where the killing bolt went in. They were put down like livestock, burned like sacrifices.
As the bodies crackled, the doctor watched the flames, her face half in shadow, half dancing in firelight. “I believe there is a cure for this,” she said.
The counselor, standing beside her, nodded, but did not turn to look her way. “Your cure is worse than the disease.”
“You believe that?”
“It’s the truth. Your way is treason.”
“You’re in denial,” the doctor said. “This is going to get worse if we don’t stop it.”
“It’s a new world, Doctor,” the counselor replied. “We can’t turn back the clock.”
“Even to save people’s lives?”
“These”—the counselor gestured at the bodies—“are not people.”
“If it spreads?”
“Is it spreading?”
The doctor watched the young members of the work detail tossing the bodies on the pyre. They moved with the assurance of youth, the kind of attitude that allowed them to stare infection and death in the face and believe it would never touch them. “I don’t know.”
“It is your job to know.”
“I can hardly understand it. The blood turns against the body. Itching, burning. Then, expulsion. Half of them bleed out.”
“And the other half?”
The doctor clenched her jaw. “They haven’t bled out yet.”
“They are in pain?”
“They can’t communicate, but we have to restrain them to keep them from scratching their skin off with their fingernails.” The doctor sighed. “So, yes, they are in pain.”
“Put them out of their misery,” the counselor ordered.
“But, we can still learn—”
“Those are the orders.” The counselor walked away, two green uniforms trailing her into the jungle. The doctor took off her white smock, pulled the blue gloves from her hands with a loud synthetic snap, and stood before the flames. She watched her latest failed experiments turn to smoke and ash in the bonfire, every bit of blood boiled away, with all the information it might have contained.
She had ideas, dangerous to share; but if she didn’t find a way, she feared, this sickness would go further than any of them could imagine. She would record a message in case she failed. She hoped that someone would still be alive to receive it.

MEET THE AUTHOR
C. Alexander London grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. He's an author of nonfiction for grown-ups (under a slightly different not very secret name), books for teens (as Alex London...see above), and, younger readers. He once won a 12-gauge skeet-shooting tournament because no one else had signed up in his age group. He's a Master SCUBA diver who hasn't been diving in way too long, and, most excitingly, a fully licensed librarian. He used to know the Dewey Decimal System from memory.

He doesn't anymore.

While traveling as a journalist, he watched television in 23 countries (Burmese soap operas were the most confusing; Cuban news reports were the most dull), survived an erupting volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a hurricane on small island in the Caribbean, 4 civil wars (one of them was over by the time he got there, thankfully), and a mysterious bite on his little toe in the jungles of Thailand. The bite got infected and swollen and gross and gave him a deep mistrust of lizards, even though it probably wasn't a lizard that bit him.

Although he has had many adventures, he really does prefer curling up on the couch and watching some good television or reading a book. He enjoys danger and intrigue far more when it's happening to somebody else.

He lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Knox was born into one of the City’s wealthiest families. A Patron, he has everything a boy could possibly want—the latest tech, the coolest clothes, and a Proxy to take all his punishments. When Knox breaks a vase, Syd is beaten. When Knox plays a practical joke, Syd is forced to haul rocks. And when Knox crashes a car, killing one of his friends, Syd is branded and sentenced to death.

Syd is a Proxy. His life is not his own.

Then again, neither is Knox’s. Knox and Syd have more in common than either would guess. So when Knox and Syd realize that the only way to beat the system is to save each other, they flee. Yet Knox’s father is no ordinary Patron, and Syd is no ordinary Proxy. The ensuing cross-country chase will uncover a secret society of rebels, test both boys’ resolve, and shine a blinding light onto a world of those who owe and those who pay. Some debts, it turns out, cannot be repaid.
REVIEW

Note: First I'll start by saying that the synopsis gives the wrong idea, since Syd is NOT sentenced to death, but he receives a severe enough sentence.

Proxy is set in a futuristic world full of technology, robots, holograms, people modified genetically, where most of the world has been destroyed either by war and natural disasters, so survivors for years have lived in Mountain City, a city where everything is handled by a network and all are connected to it, either for some updates, track them or to do changes in their DNA and the society is handled by credit, where the poor live in the lower part of the mountain and to have any type of service they need a loan, which is paid with years of service, everything costs and someone has to pay, that why the rich buy their debts to become the Patron of someone poor, and that person becomes their Proxy and receives any kind of punishment they should get.

Syd is a Proxy that since he was a baby acquired a debt of 18 years, because he´s an orphan and Knox's father one of the most powerful men in Mountain City acquired his debt, so that every transgression that Knox do, Syd is the one that receives the punishment, either being shocked with an EMD (Electro-Muscular Disruption), doing physical labor as a punishment for some mischief and for his last infringement in which someone is killed, he will receive a very severe sentence. As Syd decides to not continue paying for his Patron mistakes and despite his contract he decides to escape Mountain City. And is in that moment that he meets Knox, his Patron and the two end up in a race around Mountain City, trying to escape the Guardians, robots and others who seek them. And it´s through this escape that both realize that Syd is not an ordinary Proxy, since he has a destiny which he was not aware of and he must decide if he wants to be part of it.

On the main characters ... Sydney Carton is a guy that has lived his entire life withdrawn, with his head down, trying to go unnoticed, pining for one of his classmates and following his best and only friend in his mischiefs and trying to not buy anything that isn´t necessary because he doesn´t want a bigger debt; he lives in a small room where he works repairing any type of technology. Meanwhile Knox Brindle is a very confident and rich guy, pampered, charming, who has always lived a luxurious life and gets everything he wants, he likes to disobey all the rules and surprisingly is a skilled hacker. And to complete the trio is Marie, a rich girl that thinks the system in which she lives is wrong and wants to help the proxies.

Proxy remind me a lot how in ancient times the royal children had a whipping boy, whom received all their punishments.

This book was a pleasant addiction dystopian / futuristic / sci-fi genre, it´s action-packed, with a lot of chases, about friendship and something that I like is that it has a lot of diversity, including LGBT elements as Syd is gay, but this isn´t an essential part of the plot, he just is. And what ca I say about that ending ... that ending! ... Wow! ... I´m still don´t know how I feel about it, but it was a big shock (very unexpected), so I'll read the sequel immediately. I enjoyed it tremendously!

Review: In the End by Demitria Lunetta

Format: eARC

Rating: 3/5

You can read my review of In the After - here
She thought it was the end of the world... But it was only the beginning of the end.

It's been three months since Amy escaped New Hope. Since she's seen Baby, or Kay, or Rice. And she's been surviving on her own, like she did before she was "rescued" and taken to what she thought was a safe haven. Then, in the midst of foraging for supplies, her former fellow Guardian's voice rings out in her earpiece. And in a desperate tone, Kay utters the four words Any had hoped she would never hear:

Dr. Reynolds has Baby.

Now it's a race against time, for Baby is in imminent danger, her life threatened by the malevolent doctor who had helped start the end of the world. In order to save Baby, Amy will have to make her way to Fort Black, a former prison-turned-survivor colony. There she will need to find Ken—Kay's brother—for he holds the key to Baby's survival.

But before she can do any of this, she'll have to endure the darkest places—and people—of the prison. And one small slip-up could not only cost Baby and Amy their lives, but threaten the survival of he people in the After.

Demitria Lunetta has created an utterly compelling conclusion to the story she set forth in In the After. Readers of the Hunger Games trilogy will not be able to pit down this book, which is gripping from beginning to end.

In the End is the second and final book of this duology (I thought it was a trilogy) and although the development of it was good although a bit slow, I feel that the ending was open ended and with some loose ends.

Amy escaped New Hope with Kay´s help and was left near another settlement of known survivors - Fort Black, but Amy didn´t go there to seek refuge, so she has lived the past few months alone, that is until Kay communicates with her and gives her the news that Baby has been captured by Dr. Reynolds and her life is in danger; so she has to go to Fort Black and request the help of Kay's brother - Ken, whom is a scientist and could help her get Baby. Once in Fort Black she discovers that this used to be a prison and many of its  residents were prisoners there and life is not easy there, much less a girl without protection.

I liked the character of Amy in the previous book, because she was cautious, intelligent and stealthy something necessary to live in a post-apocalyptic world, but in this book she was too reckless, impetuous and she exposed herself to great danger in her eagerness to get as soon as possible with Baby (her adopted sister), meanwhile the post-apocalyptic world brings out the worst in people, imagine arriving to live to Fort Black which used to be a prison, where there aren´t many rules and most residents are male. There she meets Jacks a nice guy, her offers to help her and saves her more than once.

Overall, the plot was okay, the main character drove me mad for all the dangerous situations to which she exposed herself, but the plot has plenty of action, some suspense, intrigue and had me doubting the intentions of some of the characters, there is some romance, but I felt a bit slow at times. It has an open ending that was somewhat abrupt.

Review: Prototype by M.D. Waters

Title: Prototype (Archetype #2)
Author: M.D. Waters
Publisher: Dutton Adult
Release date: July 24th 2014
Source: Edelweiss
Format: eARC
Reading level: Ages 18 and up

Rating: 4.5/5

You can read my review of Archetype - here
The stunning debut that began with Archetype— and has readers buzzing—concludes in Prototype, when a woman’s dual pasts lock onto a collision course, threatening her present and future.

Emma looks forward to the day when she can let go of her past—both of them. After more than a year on the run, with clues to her parents’ whereabouts within her grasp, she may finally find a place to settle down. Start a new life. Maybe even create new memories with a new family.

But the past rises to haunt her and to make sure there’s nowhere on the planet she can hide. Declan Burke wants his wife back, and with a little manipulation and a lot of reward money, he’s got the entire world on his side. Except for the one man she dreads confronting the most: Noah Tucker.
Emma returns to face what she’s done but finds that the past isn’t the problem. It’s the present—and the future it represents. Noah has moved on and another woman is raising their daughter.

In the shocking conclusion to M.D. Waters’s spectacular debut, Emma battles for her life and her freedom, tearing down walls and ripping off masks to reveal the truth. She’s decided to play their game and prove she isn’t the woman they thought she was. Even if it means she winds up dead. Or worse, reborn.

I loved the first book of this brilliant adult duology and after that ending I needed to read its sequel immediately.

Prototype takes place a little more than a year since the events in Archetype and Emma's running of the men in her life, her past and she expects to find her parents so she can regain some normalcy and a family that can accept her, but what she isn´t expecting is that Declan will not give up on her and is willing to do anything to get her back, and she will not find a place on earth where she can hide, without someone alerting her whereabouts, and she will have no choice but to ask helps to the person she expected to never see again.

In this book we see a slightly different Emma as she finally knows who she really is and is trying to come to terms with this fact, besides she miss terrible the life that she could have had with Noah. Furthermore we see a stronger Emma and more determined to have a place in this world, regardless of the past, she´s a fighter. But besides Emma, Noah and Declan, we get to see a bit more of Foster a character that  we saw very little in the previous book, but also new characters are introduced like Leigh and Miles...I liked them a lot.

Prototype is an excellent sequel and conclusion of this fascinating and captivating series. Prototype is a fast-paced, action-packed and I loved the romance. I loved the ending!! I highly recommend this duology.

The book I´m waiting this week is

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood—those with red and those with silver. A twist of fate leads her to the royal palace itself, where, in front of the king and all his nobles, she discovers a power of her own—an ability she didn't know she had. Except . . . her blood is Red.

To hide this impossibility, the king forces her into the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks her new position to aid the Scarlet Guard—the leaders of a Red rebellion.
