Reat the prequel The Testing Guide (The Testing 0.5) and the excerpt - here
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Isn’t that what they say? But how close is too close when they may be one in the same?

The Seven Stages War left much of the planet a charred wasteland. The future belongs to the next generation’s chosen few who must rebuild it. But to enter this elite group, candidates must first pass The Testing—their one chance at a college education and a rewarding career.

Cia Vale is honored to be chosen as a Testing candidate; eager to prove her worthiness as a University student and future leader of the United Commonwealth. But on the eve of her departure, her father’s advice hints at a darker side to her upcoming studies--trust no one.

But surely she can trust Tomas, her handsome childhood friend who offers an alliance? Tomas, who seems to care more about her with the passing of every grueling (and deadly) day of the Testing. To survive, Cia must choose: love without truth or life without trust.

Usually I do not like to compare one book to another and it bothers me when they put on the cover "if you like x book you can not miss this book", so I try to treat each book independently although sometimes in the dystopian genre many books are very similar. But with The Testing it is impossible not to compare it and find many similarities with The Hunger Games, especially the second part of book. But once I got past the similarities or deja vu, I coudn´t put it down, this book is actually very entertaining, it has a lot of action, suspense and got me hooked and wanting to know what was going to happen next.

The Testing tells the story of Cia a 16-year-old girl living in a post-apocalyptic / dystopian world, where the society is organized and what was once the United States is now United Commonwealth with Tosu City as its capital. And because the world is polluted and dying, the government needs that their future leaders and scientists are the best of the best, so candidates are selected each year from each community to take "The Testing" in order to continue their studies and attend the only university of the commonwealth, which is located in Tosu City. More than 100 candidates are presented for tests every year, but only 20 are accepted, after passing the various tests to which they are subjected. And once they have attended university, they´ll work for the government helping to revitalize the destruction caused by the wars.

"The Test" is divided into four parts: written, practical, group work and physical. And something that I really liked  about this book is that all candidates are very intelligent and are brilliant in a specific area, for example: Cia, is very good fixing things and working with electrical things.

The story is told from Cia´s POV, she lives in the Five Lakes community, one of the smaller communities and more distant from Tosu city. Cia's dream is to go to the university like her father did and despite having the hope of being selected, she isn´t very confident about been selected. So she´s kind of surprised when she´s selected as a candidate for "the testing" along with others classmates. Before leaving her father tells her to not trust anyone since there are candidates capable of anything just to eliminate the competition. Among his peers is Tomas, a guy who's very smart and they support each other for the duration of "the testing" and he´s the romantic interest of Cia

Overall, I really enjoy this book, it´s well structured, I liked the world-building, it´s very well explained the background of why there was an apocalypse and how the Commonwealth was formed, it has many action scenes (some are violent), it has suspense, it´s fast-paced, there aren´t dull moments. I recommended book for fans of dystopian novels.

I can not wait to read Independent Study and see what will happen with Cia and Tomas.

With power comes enemies. Lots of them.

Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies.

He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.

Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too.

With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he’ll have to find someone he can trust...

After what happened in the previous book, Hunter Garrity is among the most undesirable people in school and the Merrick brothers and Becca don´t trust him at all. Then there is Calla, she wants to force him to contact the guides, if he doesn´t do that she will continue to cause more damage and killing people in the process. And besides the fact that no one want to be around him, he´s having problems at home with his grandparents and his mother, so Hunter is close to lose control of his life and his powers.

But among so many bad things happening in his life, he meets Kate Sullivan, the new girl in school, she's funny, beautiful, very bold and the only person that talks to him, so he finds peace and something else in her, and his attraction to her is something that he never felt before, but the question is can he trust her?

In this book all my favorites characters make an appearance: Chris, Nick, Gabriel and Michael Merrick and Becca, and none of them trust Hunter for what he did in Spark and Gabriel is really hostile to him (I can understand why he is upset). But this book allowed me to see Hunter´s side of the story, the way he was educated and trained to not trust anyone and especially the pure Elementals (aka Merrick brothers), because they´re highly dangerous and the enemy, but Hunter is at a point in his life where he doesn´t know what is right or what is wrong anymore and he has an terrible internal battle. There were times I didn´t like some of the decisions he took, but all was part of his self-discovery.

I love the Elemental series and of course I loved Spirit! and this book is a little different from Storm and Spark. This book has a mayor twist that left me with my mouth hanging open and now I know that no one is safe in this series. If you have not started reading this amazing series, then you need to read Storm, the first book in the series. And I can´t wait to read the next book: Secret, which will be Nick's book! The Elemental series books are highly addictive!

"A vivid, absorbing story about one boy’s misadventure, heartache, and hope for himself." --Rebecca Stead, Newbery Award-winning author of When You Reach Me

It's not like I meant for Danley to get hurt. . . .

Julian Twerski isn't a bully. He's just made a big mistake. So when he returns to school after a weeklong suspension, his English teacher offers him a deal: if he keeps a journal and writes about the terrible incident that got him and his friends suspended, he can get out of writing a report on Shakespeare. Julian jumps at the chance. And so begins his account of life in sixth grade--blowing up homemade fireworks, writing a love letter for his best friend (with disastrous results), and worrying whether he's still the fastest kid in school. Lurking in the background, though, is the one story he can't bring himself to tell, the one story his teacher most wants to hear.

Inspired by Mark Goldblatt's own childhood growing up in 1960s Queens, Twerp shines with humor and heart. This remarkably powerful story will have readers laughing and crying right along with these flawed but unforgettable characters.

This book reminded me of the movie Stand by me in the sense of friendship between boys in this case they´ve 12 years-old, they make many pranks and have adventures, that is until they do something to Danley a boy that is a little slow, something that Julian doesn´t want to talk about it. And this story is set in 1969.

Julian´s english teacher Mr. Selkirk asked him to writte a report about what happen with Danley, but Julian is not ready to talk about it, so he presents a report to his teacher about another event that he considers worse than what happened to Danley, that is so well written that impresses his teacher, so his teacher proposes him to continue writing and he can be excused from writing a report about Shakespeare,  so Julian is more than happy because he hates Shakespeare.

Twerp takes place from January to June in the life of a 12 years-old boy, where he writes about his day and also about his pranks with his friends from the block.

I liked how this book is told as a diary but it also has a dialogue between Julian and his friends, where we see him talking about everything except the case of bullying for which he was suspended. We see a good boy who rarely gets angry, but that is influenced by his best friend Lonnie, who is the mastermind of most of the pranks. I loved how Julian, he´s in sixth grade, he's very good runner and the fastest of the school, feels like a grown up that is not like the babies of fifth grade and he would never think to has a friendship/rivalry with one of fifth grade, that is until he meets Eduardo a fifth grader that is really fast runner and that he could take his title as "the fastest".

Overall, I really liked this book it´s very entertaining, I laughed a lot and the time when Julian finally reveals what really happened with Danley is really sad.

Dare You To by Katie McGarry

You can read my review of Pushing the Limits - here
If anyone knew the truth about Beth Risk's home life, they'd send her mother to jail and seventeen-year-old Beth who knows where. So she protects her mom at all costs. Until the day her uncle swoops in and forces Beth to choose between her mom's freedom and her own happiness. That's how Beth finds herself living with an aunt who doesn't want her and going to a school that doesn't understand her. At all. Except for the one guy who shouldn't get her, but does....

Ryan Stone is the town golden boy, a popular baseball star jock-with secrets he can't tell anyone. Not even the friends he shares everything with, including the constant dares to do crazy things. The craziest? Asking out the Skater girl who couldn't be less interested in him.

But what begins as a dare becomes an intense attraction neither Ryan nor Beth expected. Suddenly, the boy with the flawless image risks his dreams-and his life-for the girl he loves, and the girl who won't let anyone get too close is daring herself to want it all...

I have been waiting impatiently for a year to read Dare You To, which is the story of Beth and she was introduced in the first book as Noah´s sort of adoptive sister and Isaiah's romantic interest, so when I read the synopsis for the first time I almost had a fit because I realized it was not going to be the story of Beth and Isaiah, but her story with a certain Ryan ......... and I was ready to not like Ryan because in my head ...... Isaiah was indicated for her but I was wrong.

Ryan is a really good guy, he´s sweet, with good feelings, is a baseball player with aspirations of playing professional, he doesn´t do drugs, rarely drink alcohol....he´s swoon worthy  .... is impossible not to love him ...... the only detail that I found is that he takes the dares too seriously. It is precisely by a dare that he meets Beth, because she's not the type of girl that he´s usually like, she is a  tough girl, very blunt and very intimidating. So Dare You To is the story of the "bad" girl meets good boy ... the opposite of Pushing the Limits and most contemporary books that I've read so far.

To be honest, in Pushing the Limits did not like Beth much, but thanks to this book we see why she the way she is, the problems she has with her alcoholic mother, what happened when she was little, why she has trust issues and the reasons for his father's abandonment. And meanwhile Ryan is also having problems at home, because he has very strict parents who have planned all his life and Ryan begins to doubt whether his dream of being a professional baseball player are really his dream or his father´s dreams. So Ryan is at a turning point where he must decide what he wants to do with his future.

Overall, Dare You To is amazing! This book is beautifully written, is a sweet, poignant, and heartbreaking  love story. Something that I really liked is that Echo and Noah from Pushing the Limits appear in some scenes, as well as Isaiah.

I highly recommend this book if you love poignant contemporary novels. And I can not wait to read the last book of the trilogy, Crash Into You, which will be the story of Isaiah.

Thanks to Mira Ink for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Favorites Quotes
Beth feels like this storm. Constant and persistent as a whole, but the more I get close and try to clutch the individuals drops of rain, the more the water falls out of my hands.
You're a lot like that bird in the barn. You're so scared that you're going to be caged in forever you can't see the way out. You smack yourself against the wall again and again and again. The door is open, Beth. Stop running in circles and walk out.

You can read my review of Slammed - here & Point of Retreat - here
There are two sides to every love story. Now hear Will’s.

Colleen Hoover’s New York Times bestselling Slammed series has brought countless readers to their knees with a whirlwind of love, passion, and heartache.

Layken and Will’s love has managed to withstand the toughest of circumstances and the young lovers, now married, are beginning to feel safe and secure in their union. As much as Layken relishes their new life together, she finds herself wanting to know everything there is to know about her husband, even though Will makes it clear he prefers to keep the painful memories of the past where they belong. Still, he can’t resist his wife’s pleas and so he begins to untangle his side of the story, revealing for the first time his most intimate feelings and thoughts, retelling both the good and bad moments, and sharing a few shocking confessions of his own from the time when they first met.

In This Girl, Will tells the story of their complicated relationship from his point of view. Their future rests on how well they deal with the past in this final installment of the beloved Slammed series.

This Girl starts off exactly right where Point of Retreat left off, Will and Layken have overcome the drama, misunderstandings and doubts, so now they are finally together, Layken wants to reminiscent their firsts, the first time they meet, their first date, their first kiss and part of the drama that happened in the first few months after they learned that they could not be together because of Will´s work. Most of the book is about what happened in Slammed told from Will´s POV, So that the plot alternates between past and present.

I read Slammed in September last year and I didn´t remember all the details, I really like to relive the key moments of the first book in this trilogy and also find out some things that happened at that time and Layken didn´t know... There were also sad times in which Will remembers his parents (I don´t remember if this was on Slammed).
The only thing that can break the unbreakable is the unthinkable.
And hilarious moments involving Kel and Caulder (Layken´s and Will´s little brothers respectively), especially Kel, this boy is so funny... and also there is a particularly funny moment with Kiersten, this girl is just so blunt. My only problem is that I wanted to read more about this lovable characters.

This Girl is a book that I really loved, It isn´t as repetitive as I though it would be, because there were many new moments, that I didn´t  read on Slammed and that allowed me to see what Will was thinking and felt since the first moment he meet Layken and also there are new slam poems. And what I loved the most is the epilogue, is a perfect ending to this wonderful trilogy; that is among my favorites.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

Excerpt
“So not your biggest fan at the moment,” I said, closing the office door behind me. The runofffrom my jeans had soaked my sneakers pretty good. With each step, I gave a slight squishing noise accompanied by an annoying squeak against the old tile floor.

From across the room, Mom stared. “What happened to you?”
“It attacked me.” Tossing my bag on the couch, I sank into her chair and made sure to grind my butt into the cushion. Got it nice and wet. I was all about sharing the love—and right now, the love was soggy.
She laughed, waving a folder in my direction. “Surely you’re overreacting. It was one little zombie. They don’t attack people.”
“I’m serious, Ma. It tried to drown me. And the client assaulted me with ugly footwear. As far as punishments go, I’d say we’re probably square. I’ve learned my lesson.”
“You’re serious?” Amused expression now replaced by concern, she crossed the room and leaned over her desk to get a better look at me.
“As a coronary.” Once I was sure the chair had sponged up all it could, I stood and huffed past her. Pulling at my favorite T-shirt—the word Fate inside a blood red heart, is a four letter word on the back—I said, “Child welfare would not be happy to hear you tried to feed your only child to a walking corpse…”
“But why would it attack? Did you provoke it?” Folding her arms, she frowned. “Insult it, perhaps?”
I winked at her. “Provoke it? Sure. I went and wiggled my ass in front of it yelling lunch just to see what’d happen.” I’d called it Stinky, but that didn’t count as an insult. Something couldn’t be considered an insult if it was true, right?
Right eyebrow twitching, she fought against a smile. “But you’re okay, right? No bites, broken bones, head injuries, possessions…?”
I smiled and did a little twirl. “All in one piece and still me.”
Mom had a checklist she went through at the end of each job. I was known for taking almost as much damage as I inflicted.
“Oh, and you’re probably going to get a call from the client. I sorta smashed her fence in the process.”
Mom groaned. “I told you to be more careful.”
“It’s not like I tried to break anything.”
“Something tells me you didn’t try hard enough not to break anything, either.”
“In my defense, it wasn’t a simple trap and slap…”
“We can’t afford this.” She reached down and pulled a white envelope out from under a stack of papers. “This is the bill for that Mercedes you smashed.”
“Oh! So not my fault. How was I supposed to know that Spring Heel was gonna land on the car? If it makes you feel any better, I think he was aiming for my head…”
“If you keep this up, we won’t even be able to afford the rent.”
She was right, of course, and it made me feel horrible. “I’m sorry. I guess I’m a wrecking ball wrapped in blue jeans. Take my cut of this job and put it toward the repairs. Keep my paycheck for the next month, too.” A good start, but it didn’t feel like enough. Sure, it would cover the damages—I hoped—but I felt guilty about upsetting her. The bills that were piling up kept her awake at night. This was only going to make things worse. We got a fair amount of business, but the overhead in our line of work was sky high.
As much as I hated the idea, I knew what would cheer her up. “I’ll even throw in pet possessions for the next month.”

Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies…

That’s what seventeen-year-old Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of just one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past that she wishes could just stay buried.

Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever.

After reading SlammedPoint of Retreat and now Hopeless, which are among my favorites NA novels. I've become a big fan of Colleen Hoover, she´s an excellent writer and I love her books. And the title of this book is perfect.

Hopeless is a wonderful, extraordinary, beautiful, sad, intense, it broke my heart more than once, it left me stunned at other times, this book is an emotional rollercoaster. After reading the synopsis you can have an idea about where the story goes and to some extent predict it, but I was completely wrong in several of my predictions and on more of one occasion I could not believe what I was reading and I was in shock. With this book I laugh, cry and it literally left me speechless.

This story is told entirely from the point of view of Sky, a girl who is about to turn 18 year-old and is for the first time attending public school because she used to be homeschooled. And she has never been attracted to guys or girls (the check both just in case), that is until she meets Holder, he makes her feel lust and desire for the first time, something she had never felt with any of the guys she has kissed (which have been many). But Holder not just make her feel desire he also make her feel afraid, so at the beginning she doesn´t know how to react to him, but Holder is a very persistent guy, so something do happen between them. Holder is weird  sometimes and sometimes he is just to lovable and occasionally he drifts off, this because he has a secret that affects them both.

Both as Sky and Holder are very lovable characters, I liked them very much, although there was a time I did not know what was happening in Holder´s mind, but after the big reveal, I LOVE him!

I highly recommend this book for adults, since some of the topics are unsuitable for younger readers. I'm dying to read Losing Hope, which will be told from the point of view of Holder.
